MOVING THE IMAGE
(The painters loop)
Lecture and workshop with Markus Draper

“Many of my videos almost have the character of a film still, or at least they return as loop to the point of origin. In my opinion, this comes about through my training as a painter and hence the attempt to seek, in film, an expansion of the painted image. The expansion of the painted image would therefore be time, more of a „morphing“ connected to time, and less narration in general. This way, as I see it, the viewer gets more freedom to decide how and from what direction he wants to look at my works, similar to the way he would look at a picture, because there is, generally, no “story” which he might miss out on. Personally, I never like being cooped up in video booths in order to be able to understand the beginning and end of the work.”

As trained and practicing painter, Markus Draper deliberately uses different artistic media since the beginning of his career, using film more intensely since 2005. The often simultaneous interaction between the different media is very important to him. In this way, his group of paintings Boden Null (Ground Zero) arose, for the most part, out of video stills from his own film footage. Despite the diversity of his means and media, Draper still considers himself a painter. To avoid getting too lost amidst the technical possibilities in the medium of film, he maintains a “reduction of means”: he often enjoys working with a single camera which can only shoot 30 sec. sequences, and uses low-tech editing programs.

In pt. 3 of the workshop series, Painter – Filmer – Writer, we concentrate on the PAINTER in the title, and on practical aspects: how would a painter relate to “moving image”? Markus Draper will give a presentation of his work and continue with a workshop, that aimes at the praxis of looped images seen through a painter´s eye.
