The source material for “Ashes in my Eyes” is a home video recording made by an amateur of the reports on eruption of the volcano the Mount St. Helens on May 18, 1980. In it, the natural disaster is staged as a media spectacle – interrupted by recording errors of the home video recorder, commercial breaks, and remnants of older recordings.
Draper juxtaposes this with the reporting of TV journalist Dave Crockett in written images only. He was surprised by the eruption in the immediate vicinity of the volcano’s cone. Due to the intense ash rain, Crockett found himself plunged into complete darkness in broad daylight. In order not to lose his courage, he nevertheless turned on his camera, started talking to himself and thus tried to escape the natural disaster.
